From pantomime to profound
Speaker's Corner, London, 21 September 2025
Some thought the self-styled preachers surrounded by cameras were loud and expressive to gain more views on social media. One young man called the Corner a content farm. He said Shias and Sunnis often clashed. Christians clashed with Muslims too. All sides would quote each other’s holy books with some having arguments prepared in folders and refusing to answer that posed to them, instead shouting over the other with pre-prepared questions such as “Was Jesus a Jewish man?” leading to “How can a Jewish man become God?” All sides gave as good as they got. A Christian called Muslims mentally insane, further that they should not be allowed to walk the streets. A Muslim hounded Christians telling them their churches were closing, but had no answer when a Christian asked him why. Christians asked Muslims about beatings ordered in the Quran. An African man refused to shake hands with Arabs. A man claiming to have been in the BNP carried a sign through the crowd which read TOMMY ROBINSON IS A MOSSAD ASSET. Some Muslims and Christians talked at a reasonable volume, for them this was about saving others, they believed in a god, that their fellow humans needed to hear a message, that the Day of Judgement was approaching. They weren’t there for the cameras and the drama, instead for their faith. As the night fell over the park, a lone Christian stood on a step ladder singing into the sky.
