A large contingent of Tommy Robinson’s supporters saw to it that the march on the 13th of September was violent. Shouting Tommy’s name they attacked the police with glass bottles, flares and fists, called them ‘traitors’ and spat at them. Whipped up by Elon Musk who told them on a big screen to ‘fight back or die’, they ignored police advice to avoid the opposing march and instead clashed with both police and protestors. 26 police officers were injured. Horses and dogs were deployed. Tommy asked his supporters not to wear masks, but as they fought the police they hid their faces with flags and hoodies, and smacked cameras away. Chants of “Fuck the Palestinians” were heard. The right wing occupied Trafalgar Square and one man, with a St George flag, climbed onto the bronze relief made from captured French guns depicting the death of Nelson. Whether he was aware of its history is unknown. The right wing march had started near Waterloo, where flags were being sold for £5 and passages from the Bible and a booklet of British Patriotic Songs given out free. A man held a sign reading “Ex MUSLIMS UNITED”, there was two of them, one wore a Union Jack hat, the other had become a Christian. Other Christians wondered if politics had failed and the UK needed to come together under the teachings of Jesus. At this stage the march was peaceful. As the crowd gathered near Downing Street to hear Tommy speak, people said their children were being raped. A major theme discussed in the crowd was the need for remigration. Among the police were white, black and brown officers. On the stand of the antifascist march, speakers included Zahra Sultana of the recently formed Your Party and Dianne Abbot, the first black woman elected to Parliament. As the clashes became controlled by the police, the right wing were held behind a police line and the left led away. As they passed both sides made their feelings felt. Though divided, both crowds had an intense dislike of Keir Starmer.
